I already posted about this in the blog, but this is probably a better place.

I just made available a script I wrote: KGTD2Go

This script will automagically transfer your KGTD action lists to your iPod without fuss, hassle, or the need to add another button to your OOP toolbar! (It also works great for exporting your next actions to any device that can read plain text files.)

Get it here, you know you want it!

“But wait,” you might say, “iCal already handles that!” Well, yeah, it does, provided that you don’t mind ALL your next actions getting lumped together without context or order along with your (filthy) pending actions which aren’t even NEXT but keep trying to bump up in the line!

Specifically, KGTD2Go has a few significant advantages over the iCal sync:

1- It maintains context. The KGTD2Go folder has a folder for each context, containing text files for each task. The text file contains notes, project information, and context so that you always know what you’re looking at!

2- It marks next actions with an asterisk and sorts them at the top of the actions list for each context

3- It has a separate “Next Actions” list, right along with the contexts.

It’s simple to use and install (unlike the first version). Just download it, double click it, and it’ll walk you through the setup. Next time you plug in your iPod, your KGTD file will be synced nearly instantly to your iPod! (Or your keychain drive, or your Palm’s SD card, or… well, you get the idea!)

Or, if you prefer, you can be a control freak and run it as an applet whenever you want. Or both! We’re all about CHOICE here!

Now that we’re up to version 2, it’s been pretty thoroughly tested, and it has yet to destroy a bunch of information on anyone’s HD, iPod or KGTD file! ;)

And just how exactly does

And just how exactly does one -
“set it as the folder action for your /Volumes/ folder (to nagivate, use the “Go” command and type in /Volumes),”
??

Seriously. This sounds cool, but I can’t figure it out.

This Rocks! I have been

This Rocks! I have been debating between an iPod and some sort of PDA, always leaning towards the PDA. But I love my hipster. You need to write a detailed how-to and post a link here.

Easier installation

If you re-downlad the zip file, I’ve included an Applescript droplet that handles the installation and configuration for you. Hopefully that will work around any problems you folks are having.

If that doesn’t work, these pages should help:

Using Folder Actions Setup
Attaching folder actions to the /Volumes folder

If y’all are still having trouble, email me. My address is in the read-me file and in the script itself.

Alternative to Folder Actions

I had problems getting the Folder Action to work so instead, I modified the script slightly with hardcoded path to my iPod and launch the script using Do Something When. Works great!

Thanks for great script.

Martinstrom, what's your

Martinstrom, what’s your iPod named?

I’m curious why it didn’t work. I thought I’d coded for most eventualities except for iPods without “iPod” in the disk title.

KGTD2Go version 2 is now

KGTD2Go version 2 is now out! Changes include…

* Second official release, by popular demand!
* Many optimizations, bug fixes
* Changed from script to applet
* Added preferences file to enable syncing to arbitrary disks
* Changed script to look for “meta-actions” instead of a section named “Actions,” to support KGTD users who changed this in their configuration (Thanks, Ray!)
* Added automatic setup, eliminating the need to edit the script
* Made the applet run KGTD2Go on open, rather than just as a folder action
* Now exports as multiple text files with metadata (Context, Project, Notes) intact for viewing on iPod

If you've already rushed to

If you’ve already rushed to download KGTD2Go, you may want to get it again. Version 2.1 is now up with some bug fixes.

Just released version 2.3.

Just released version 2.3. Looks like there’s a few users of this script, so it’s been.. busy fixing all these bugs and oddities.

It now exports as UTF-8 text instead of UTF-16 so it works better with other programs (such as MacNoteTaker on the Palm). Properly catches bad file names (e.g. colons in your actions, not to be confused with action in your colon), no longer searches MY hard drive for the preferences file, and a variety of other minor bug fixes.

Obviously it’s a must-have update for all KGTD-to-go users. Really. It’s a lot less buggy.

Get it here!

And yes, I’m pretty confident I can get this updated for KGTD 0.8 when that hits the stands. The code’s pretty modular, so I’ll just need to account for any changes in the document layout. The rest is pretty simple. And hey, I can’t live without it, myself, so I NEED to update it!

Quick note: KGTD2Go works

Quick note: KGTD2Go works just fine with OOP 3.6 beta.
