Embarassingly remedial question

I am a new Mac user, & complete kGTD and OmniOutline neophyte. After being repeatedly frustrated by trying to use my Palm on the Mac I am attempting to switch over to kGTD & OO.
However, I can’t even load the kGTD in conjunction with OO b/c when I get to the part that tells me to use “Command-4” to find the data icon, I press the apple key & 4 (as well as numerous other keys in frustration) and nothing happens. Since others obviously load these programs painlessly, I’d appreciate some advice. Thank you.
There's another way
In the toolbar at the top of your file window, click on the blue I button. This will open all the inspectors. You want the one that says “Document”. Click on the gear icon under Document and you’ll be in the Advanced tab where you can activate “Document-specific toolbar”.
Then follow the rest of the instructions.
