For kGTD to be useful to me so I’m NOT overwhelmed by the HUGE list of actions I’ve accumulated, I cannot sort manually. In settings, I’ve made all actions auto sorting settings false yet when I drag a task higher up on the list, it goes back after syncing.
Also, I can’t seem to figure how to print kGTD lists to 4-up, hPDA size docs without going blind trying to read them…actually, I can’t read them making them useless.
I’d very much appreciate any insight into these issues.
It feel as though I’m in GTD limbo since nothing is happening with kGTD and OmniFu is still on the horizon [sigh] kGTD is the only system that comes close to meeting my needs compared to the zads of other “GTD” apps out there.
Hi Vern, Back in System 7
Hi Vern,
Back in System 7 days, I used a program called ClickBook which imposed booklets, reorganized your print job so that you could print two sided on a non-duplex printer, and shrunk, enlarged, rotated as needed to fit any job to any format.
It still exists, and will probably haandle your printing. But they have an unbelievably vacuous website, so that I really can’t tell for sure. They do give a telephone number, so you could ask them.
Nope. I’ve monkeyed around
Nope. I’ve monkeyed around with almost every setting in Reorganize and no luck. In fact, after synching, the Keep sorted>Action, A-Z is rechecked! The only place where manually sorting sticks, is in Projects which then carries over to Actions…[sigh]
Regarding the printing, thanks for the tips, I think my next step is to go landscape with 6 or 9 per page. We’ll see.
Vern, Because the Actions
Vern,
Because the Actions section is rebuilt from the Projects list on each Sync, it may still not keep your manual sort the way you want it,after Syncing, even if you do get the settings to co-operate.
If you still want to try to turn off the alphabetical sorting in Actions, I think the procedure you want is:
Set Auto-sort … to “false” under KGTD Settings>Actions Settings.
Open the utility drawer & pull up the dot at the bottom of the drawer to display the styles pane. Select All Level 2 rows.
Press Cmd-2 to open the Rows Inspector and select the Advanced tab which is the gear wheel. Uncheck Sort children.
In the Utility drawer, select the Actions section.
Now, in Reorganize > Keep Sorted sub-menu, choose Clear Sorting
Sync and check that Keep Sorted no longer has a setting.
Good luck.
Thanks Paul. After following
Thanks Paul. After following your tips above, if I drag an action item up the list and then sync, it does not stick. To have some kind of sorting feature, I tried your advice in the FAQ’s about sorting by date and that was working fine until today… Now I’m getting this pop-up message when I sync:
(Edit Script) (OK)”
Any ideas if/where I messed some setting up?
[UPDATE] I tried a brand spankin new OOP document, and made a kGTD document out of it. I then changed the setup per the “sort by due date” FAQ, pasted in my projects and I’m getting the above message on my second sync - same as before.
Unfortuantely, the error
Unfortuantely, the error message is from Cocoa, so it doesn’t tell us what object it was trying to remove. Could be an iCal todo, a named style, a project or context name (well, probably not a context, since you were starting from just your projects) or a task that had been archived.
Make sure that syncing to iCal is turned off while you’re trying to sort this out. Your tests will run faster and it will remove a potential complication.
Having it crash on the second sync might be caused by some project or sub-project being treated as a task, or vice versa, in part of the first sync, leaving bogus info that can’t be processed on the second sync.
So maybe look for a sub-project or project that has a context or a start date or a due date set on it. Or that has a note that starts with “meta_”.
Assuming there’s nothing obvious like that, you could do a binary search through the projects to isolate which data are causing Sync to crash.
[Alternatively, you could run Sync from Script Editor to identify which script line is crashing, but I find it very tedious to work back from that to what data caused the problem.]
I guess the other possibility is my little test file (for the sorting instructions) didn’t cover some structure or characteristic that your data file has, so that I’ve given you bogus instructions. If you don’t find anything, I’ll give you an address to send me your file, if you want.
Paul, Well, I went and
Paul, Well, I went and created another brand new kGTD doc and took my time and followed your directions for auto-sorting by date and all seems to be well now. So it looks like one of my settings was off. Phew! Still can’t sort manually, but I’ll settle for sort by date for now. Thanks for the help! Vern
